» Rumours over Sony’s decision to clear PS3 stock

Following the decision by technology giant Sony to clear PS3 stock from the shelves rumours have been sparked that there may soon be an announcement regarding a new Sony console that could be ready to hit the shelves and replace the PS3.

It was recently reported that technology giant Sony has told retailers that they should not expect any further deliveries of the Sony PS3 until next month, and to clear the stock that is remaining on the shelves. Games retailers have been told simply to get rid of the stock on the shelves and that it will be September before any further shipments of the PS3 will be received, according to recent reports.

This has sparked rumours amongst many industry officials that the company may have something up its sleeve with regards to replacing the PS3, hence its decision not to bring in any further shipments of the console. Some officials have said that it could mean that Sony is set to announce the launch of the Slim PS3, and this is the reason behind the company’s decision to clear existing PS3 stock.

One games retailer official said: “Sourcing PS3 stock has been a challenge for the last two to three weeks. There are obviously lots of rumours flying about as to why that might be. I don’t think it’s to do with demand, though. Sales are low at the moment and have been for a while. We’ve been told not to expect any further hardware deliveries until September.”

The rumours are being further fuelled by the fact that Sony is due to attend at press conference at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, where many think that some sort of announcement might take place with regards to the possibility of a new release, particularly with the Christmas shopping period set to begin over the next couple of months.
