It has recently been reported that inmates at a UK prison have lost the right to use PS3 consoles over fears of hatching escape plans through the system’s WiFi features, but the Ministry of Justice claims that they never had these rights in the first place.
It was recently reported that fears over escape plans being hatched had resulted in inmates from one prison losing access to their games consoles. The inmates at Rye Hill Prison were said that have lost the right to use Playstation 3 consoles because there were fears that they were using the WiFi feature of the system to contact people on the outside, thus increasing the chances of them hatching escape plans.
Whilst some industry officials said that the real issue should have been the fact that the inmates were able to get a WiFi signal at all rather than the fact that they were using the WiFi features of the PS3, the Ministry of Justice has claimed that the inmates of the prison never had access to PS3 consoles in the first place. Officials from the Ministry of Justice said that there have been regulations in for some years that for bid prisoner access to devices that allow contact with the outside.
One official from the Ministry stated: “There are not and never have been Playstation 3s at HMP Rye Hill. Prisoners in England and Wales have never been allowed access to wireless enabled technology such as that used in some games consoles.”
However, despite the claims of the Ministry of Justice, reports have claimed that it was prison wardens that discovered that the inmates were using the PS3 to contact people outside of the prison walls.
