A story started by a popular web blog with regards to the new Sony PSP 4000 has now been picked up by the Internet rumour mill following a podcast that was recently loaded and then suddenly removed, which points to the new PSP having been seen, although many believe that if this were true the information was suppose to be kept secret.
Rather than keeping the model name of PSP 4000 as Sony had named it, the latest claims seem to point towards the name of the new unit being called the Sony PSP Go! Console.
The new name given to the console does potentially have a certain level of credibility due to Sony already having a range of accessories named PSP Go!, although there are mixed opinions of the new name.
Compared to the PSP 3000 it is believed that the new PSP Go! will excitingly have slide-out controls and a larger screen, however, until full details have been announced by Sony these features will not be confirmed. The E3 Expo that will be held in June, which will be the next big event, could possibly be used to provide a launch date for the new unit.
Also rumoured is the claim that the PSP Go! will move over to the downloading of PSP games and will be losing its UMD game drive, which would mean that Bluetooth or Wi-Fi functionality will be provided with the new PSP if this information was true. Flash memory sizes of 8GB, 16GB or even 32GB is expected to come with the PSP Go!
It is also likely that the PSP Go! may have a screen size of around 800 x 480, which will hopefully be touch-screen, and a camera, when the specs of the new Nintendo DSi are considered.
The new PSP could be launched later this year in Japan and the US prior to Christmas if an announcement is made by Sony this summer. Although unless the launch is made in the UK alongside the US release, which is not the usually way these releases take place, it is unlikely that the UK will see a pre-Christmas release. The missed commercial opportunity for failing to release in the UK before Christmas would probably not be lost on Sony though.
