Since the release of the Sony Playstation 3 in 2006 the losses suffered by Sony have been considerable due to the build costs of the Sony console, although now the equipment manufacturer has announce that it has now drastically cut the cost of building the PS3 unit.
The production costs that are involved in the building of the PS3 have been significantly reduced since their initial release back in 2006, according to the latest news from Sony.
When it was launched the cost of building the PS3 was said to have been around $800, although this figure has now been reduced by as much as 70 percent according to the CEO of Sony Corp, Nobuyuki Oneda. Although this is a huge breakthrough on many different levels, the most important breakthrough is that the hardware if now finally making a profit for Sony, and a recent report stated “the 70 percent decrease suggests that costs have come down to around £146 ($240) per unit.”
The concept that a console costs more to produce than it sells for is common with practically all consoles, which means that companies losing money of the sale of their consoles is a commonplace occurrence. It is usually a couple of years before consoles like the Sony PS3 actually make any kind of return on their sale.
Anyone who is expecting that this latest new will mean that the PS3 will be dropped in price from its current value are likely to be very disappointed at the moment. For a long time now Sony have been posting significant losses on it PS3 console and because of this Sony will most probably be attempting to recoup its losses by keeping the prices the same. The rumours of Sony releasing a new Sony PS3 Slim in place of the current PS3 is considered by many industry experts to be an alternative to dropping its price.
